Lasagna Gardening Tips

Lasagna gardening has nothing to do with what you grow in the garden. It refers to the garden construction method, which is essentially adding layers of organic materials "Cook-down" over time, resulting in a rich, sweet to help their plants thrive. Also known as "sheet composting" lasagna gardening is great for the environment because you are using your yard and kitchen waste composting and essentially in place for a new garden.

Lasagna gardening is a no-dig, no-till organic gardening method that results in rich soil, soft with the work of very little gardener. One of the best things about gardening is like lasagna is easy. You must not remove sod and existing weeds. The first layer of lasagne is your garden or cardboard or layers of newspaper directly on the grass or weeds in the area you have selected for your garden. Wet this layer down to keep everything in place and start the decomposition process. Everything you put in a compost pile, you can put in a garden lasagna. The materials you put the garden will break, providing the friable soil rich in nutrients for the plant. Pull your grass clippings, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps, manure, garbage, leaves, and anything else that will break.

The reason is probably called a lasagna garden is because you spend layers to build your garden, as you do when you make edible lasagne. Want alternating "brown" layers such as autumn leaves, shredded newspaper, peat moss, pine needles and with layers of "green" such as vegetable scraps, yard trimmings and grass clippings. In general, you want your layers "brown" to be about twice as deep as their "green" layers. Lasagna gardening is fun, easy, and allows you to make new gardens at a much faster rate than the old method of double digging. Now your only problem will be to find plants to fill all those new gardens.
