Youth Hostels Guide

The first youth hostel was founded by Richard Schirrmann around 1909. Schirrmann was a German teacher who organized trips and visits with his students.

Schirrmann then had the idea to use schools that were empty during the holiday cottages for young people who traveled in groups in the area. The idea caught on quickly, and in 1930, there were over two thousand hostels in Germany.

The idea has spread elsewhere in Europe, and after a major international conference in 1932, the idea was exported to the United States and many other countries, and the Federation International Youth Hostel is born with the idea to provide accommodation cheap for young travelers. Over time, the concept of the inn has expanded, and now hostels accept guests of all ages, offering cheap accommodation, but comfortable and a unique atmosphere, which can be found in hotels.

Hostels equipment

If you are traveling for a long time, buy yourself a good backpack, which fits you comfortably, and do not exceed the load - a heavy backpack can be very painful to wear when it's summer and it's hot . Choose comfortable shoes, and keep cool shoes for nights out.

Some hostels may not allow sleeping bags for hygienic reasons (you may have been sleeping around with a sleeping bag, and hostelling is not the same as camping).

Some hostels will provide a sleep call sheet, which is two sheets sewn together so that they form a kind of bag. Thus, the bed clean.

Social Life hostels

Hostels are definitely the place for socializing. Since the guests in a hostel are mostly younger people, there are many opportunities to meet other travelers. Some hostels organize parties, meetings or competitions, or to have a bar inside or outside its premises where people can meet and chat with other guests.

Hostellers are generally more interested in meeting other people than your average tourist, it is much easier to get in touch with them, share common interests and exchange tips, recommendations, etc. Many people travel on their own in a country or continent for over a year and depend meetings chance to make friends.

Remember, you can always meet people who have opinions (about politics, sex, religion, country) that are very different from yours, then you must be prepared to be tolerant and understanding other positions and views on life people. So if you go to a hostel, waiting to meet new friends (especially if you speak several languages) and put your best smile.

Hostels compared to hotels

There are several types of hostels nowadays, and all of them tend to have their special characteristics; some are more like standard hotels, some are a completely different experience. The main difference is that most hostels offer accommodation in shared dormitories or bedrooms. Although many hostels now offer private rooms with private bathroom, the atmosphere is always very different from your average hotel. Only considering only the hotels tend to offer its customers a comfortable place to spend the night, hostels tend to have more of a social atmosphere that is often dining tables share derivatives, washing machines, dryers, and with other clients.

Many hostels organize parties and excursions for their guests, and many have a bar where people can meet and know each other. Basically, hostels are usually a good place to make friends, meet people from distant countries, with different ways of his to exchange tips on clubs, museums, shows, shops and others.

Different kinds of hostels

Accommodations come in all shapes and sizes today. City hostels tend to lean more towards the social aspects / fun of city life, offering information about pubs, tours of the city, thrift and nightclubs stores. Country hostels are a very different thing. They are mostly frequented by people who travel the country, perhaps walking or hiking.
