Ben Thanh Market, largest covered market in Ho Chi Minh City, is something that must be seen to be believed! Built by the French during the colonial period, the market is now home to hundreds of food products, textiles, furniture and household goods tents. Prepare to bargain hard as vendors push their products as if they went out of fashion, some, ironically, really!

Ho Chi Minh City is home to some pretty spectacular looking pagodas. Best of all is that they are open for visitors to enter, walking barefoot and burn incense sticks. Popular pagodas include Hoi Son, on the output of the hill and classified as a national treasure, and the Jade Emperor, home to hundreds of freshwater turtles swim in a pool in its grounds.

One of the clearest memories of past French colonial Vietnam, the Notre Dame Cathedral Duc Ba and as the locals call it, it is worth a stop during your gap year. Standing in front of the cathedral is another of the most famous buildings in the city, the National Bureau Post, where a huge portrait of Ho Chi Minh look down you send your postcard home.
