Peter Schmeichel Manchester United Legend


Born in Denmark in 1963, Peter Schmeichel became one of the greatest goalkeepers of Manchester United. In eight years at the club Schmeichel won five championships, three FA Cups, the League Cup, the Super Cup and the Champions League.

Schmeichel signed for Manchester United in 1991 from Danish side Brøndby amounting to £ 530,000. The team won four Danish first division championship titles in five seasons and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1991. Schmeichel had also become the first choice goalkeeper for the Danish national team and his talents was noticed when he played in the European Football Championship 1988 in Germany.


During the first season of Peter Schmeichel Manchester United finished second in the league for winners Leeds United but they won silverware this season by winning the final of the League Cup for the first time when they beat Nottingham Forest 1-0.

The following season, United won the Premier League, which was their first league title in twenty-six. Schmeichel has kept 22 clean sheets as United won the championship by a massive ten points, and he was again named as the best goalkeeper of worlds.

The 1993-94 season saw United retain the Premier League title and this time add the FA Cup after beating Chelsea 4-0 in the final.

The Reds were the favorite of everyone to win the title for the third consecutive year in the 1994-95 season, but lost to Blackburn in the Premier League and lost the FA Cup final at Everton side determined which ensured a victory by 1 0, to leave United trophy less season.

During the 1995-96 season United claimed a second pair with for recovery to overthrow Premier League Newcastle who had a 10-point lead over them at Christmas. United beat old rivals Liverpool 1-0 in the FA Cup. This famous season saw Peter Schmeichel score his first and only goal for United as he scored with a header in a match of the UEFA Cup. In total, he scored 11 goals during his career, including a goal for Denmark. A remarkable achievement for a goalkeeper.

1999 was probably the best Schmeical season at United as they got the Premier League and FA Cup and face Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League, falling 1-0 in the final minutes of the game to win 2- 1 . Schmeichel, captain of the night in the absence of Roy Keane and he made a series of fine saves to keep United in the game and eventually win the trophy.

Later, he returned to the Premier League to play for Aston Villa and Manchester City.
