Manchester United Hero

Norman Whiteside

When people hear the mention of the Shankill Road in Belfast, which would most likely think of a place where angels fear to thread. Formed in the Shankill Road in Belfast, Norman Whiteside was discovered by none other than Bob Bishop, who previously recommended George Best and Sammy McIlroy to the Old Trafford club. Whiteside has obtained legendary status when he became the youngest player to score in an FA Cup final Manchester United beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-0 in 1983 replay.

Despite being converted to a player from midfield, he also scored the winning goal in the 1985 final FA Cup to give Manchester United victory over Everton. Referee Peter Willis also managed to hit the headlines this hot afternoon in London as Kevin Moran became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final after his rather clumsy challenge on Everton half Peter Reid.

Even if they were reduced to ten players, Manchester United, however, thought their chances as the game entered overtime. With 110 minutes on the clock, Norman Whiteside, suddenly cut to the right and hit a sensational curling shot after Neville Southall fully stretched 25 yards. It was a moment of pure magic from Whiteside as he scored the only goal bringing the glory of the FA Cup for the club at Old Trafford again.

Norman Whiteside became 273 games for Manchester United by scoring a total of 66goals in the process. Plagued by a knee injury, he eventually was sold to Everton in 1989 for £ 600,000. A regular member of the immensely talented team of Northern Ireland, which was for the World Cups 1982 and 1986, Whiteside won 38 full caps for his country.

When an injury ended his playing career at the relatively young age of 26, Whiteside became a foot doctor and he now works at the Professional Footballers' Association.
