Inhabitants of the island were Arawak Indians. In 1634 the Dutch occupied the island and the capital Willemstad was founded by the Dutch West Indies Company in a natural harbor. Furthermore, in 1662 the Dutch West India Company made the island a center for the African slave trade. Dutch captains brought African slaves to Curacao, where they were sold and shipped to the colonies throughout the Caribbean and South America. When in 1863 the Dutch abolished slavery, the island's fortunes declined and many of its inhabitants emigrated to other colonies.
Profits from the slave trade brought wealth to Curacao and enabled the construction of quite impressive colonial buildings. The Curacao architecture combines Spanish and Dutch colonial style and many farms have been restored and are open to the public. Another great place to walk in Curacao is the Salinas salt marsh, where flamingos gather to feed. Other popular dishes are soup Stoba in guiambo papaya and goat soup made from seafood and okra, Sopi Mondongo soup intestines and paste funchi cornmeal. Special holiday dishes feature hallaca or pekele cod and kos dushi sweet. Curacao is also famous for its Curacao liqueur, which is made of a citrus fruit known locally as laraha.
