You can sync Gmail with Microsoft Outlook using the POP server as well. However, it is noteworthy that the POP server only provides a means for synchronizing emails and other resources, etc. This means that the changes you make in your Microsoft Outlook will not reflect on your Gmail account on the web. On the other hand, IMAP offers two-way synchronization for Gmail. So IMAP is preferable to POP.
If you choose not to leave a copy of messages on server option, all your emails from Gmail will be transferred to your Microsoft Outlook and will not be available on the webmail account.
