La Liga Rules for Non European Players



La Liga or Liga BBVA is the top-level professional football club competition in Spain. It is considered one of the most popular leagues and most competitive in the world with the English Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 and other most viewed national leagues. Like any football league in the world, La Liga is also guided by specific rules as prepared by the authorities of Spanish football in line with FIFA guidelines. Now lets take a look closer to the Liga Rules for non-European players.

Rules for non-European players in the Liga

Under the rules of the league, a club playing in Spanish football Premier League has no right to recruit more than three non-European players. The same number is 2 to the second division football clubs (LigaAdelate). The second division B clubs are not allowed to recruit a player outside the EU. Clubs relegated to the second or third division, however, the right to maintain the non-European players until their contracts expire.

According to a decision taken by the Spanish Federation, teams playing in La Liga and the second division of the country should make optimum use of the rules and build their teams with foreign taxpayers as much as allowed by the entity.

Citizenship for foreign players

Under the rules of the league, players can claim citizenship of Spain from their country of origin. A non-European player can apply for Spanish citizenship.
