Everyone
has different ways to write music if you sit down with your guitar, play and
hum until you get something you like, or take a few hits on reason. However,
one thing that many authors and composers often have in common is the linearity
in his music making. When
you write a song on an instrument, you fill in the verses and choruses in a
time line, one after another.
This form of writing is as old as the hills and is probably the most tested medium tried , natural and widely used to compose. The mixer and recorder were more linear in that at the beginning, you could not go back and change the record. You played the role from beginning to end and change anything was a new release. When the music of the computer as we know it today has evolved, so that computing power became able to mimic the desktop environment and mixing step sequencer does. This was mainly because the companies that make the software had to try to convince guys who used studio equipment their careers to purchase the software, and the best way to get on the computers was to report what happening on the screen at they knew.
So ... We are now in the position that most commercial software is based on a linear time line. Some of the software is truly amazing and they allow you to do all sorts of amazing things, and it's getting better all the time. I love some of these programs and have spent much of my time to learn to use and deal with the line of linear time. To think in linear terms, we can say that it is a kick and hi-hat hit after the half, then a kick and a trap behind the other half hit etc. To watch a global perspective of the timeline, we can say that there are eight bass drum beats, equally spaced on eight beats, from the first half. The hi-hat is the same, but the first half-time, and there are four equally spaced traps, from the second half. This type of model can be described briefly in a textual programming language, but that's not what this article is about.
Max / MSP, this standard battery could be done using an object called a counter with about four times per beat. Once it reaches a certain number, it starts again, after sixteen quarters beats a 4/4 bar. With this in mind, it is easy to make the program play a bass drum at 'a' against hits, and each quarter to beat later, a hi-hat when you hit 'three' most every room, after, Beat- quarter and the loop in the "five", but only repeat every eight quarter beat. With the loop you against the same musical effect as before, but without visible calendar. From here you can add other two counters, a readjustment after eight beats and other readjustment after eleven. Set sounds more to be triggered on other various beats counters. Make a counter counting at a different speed. Make another stop for eight hits tions of it is the normal number. From these simple parameters you can do some crazy sound beats and musical phrases you never thought before that it would be a lot of time in a normal sequencer, and probably take a decade drum practice playing in the acoustic world! Beats and time are not the only thing to mess with though. Melody, harmony, timbre, synth parameters you want. You can create or change anything you want. To import an image from your studio and have the colors of the image dictating notes for your music? You want to have different notes played his guitar broke different drum loops? Try something beyond schedule can reap great rewards, especially in inspiration and be able to have an idea of the music and put it into action.
