Sustainable Agriculture

A sustainable farm should be able to produce food without depleting natural resources needed to grow other products in the future. Where once farmers grazing animals, today's sustainable livestock farmers think of themselves as the management of three living ecosystems: their animals; grass and ground cover that animals need to eat to survive and soil which is ultimately the most important element to manage. Irrigation Agriculture

Some sectors of agriculture rely heavily on irrigation such as rice and cotton. Other industries, such as soybeans, horticulture, cereals and livestock grazing also use irrigation. Modern irrigation widespread with the green revolution as a means to produce food in areas that have no natural flow or adequate rainfall to support crops, although irrigation can be traced back to Egyptian times .

However others argue that without irrigation in parts of the world that sustainable agriculture would not be possible. The debate moves slowly to find a point where the two objectives can be achieved to deliver sustainable agriculture and sustainable systems of rivers and water downstream of where irrigated agriculture is ongoing.
