Top European Winter Holiday Destinations

Top European Winter Holiday Destinations You Should Know ~ Europe is the perfect place to spend a nice vacation during the first few months of each year, while benefiting from the off season bargains. The well known European summer destinations are in their off-peak/off-season intervals, of course, but this does not mean that they are deserted, or have nothing to offer – on the contrary. Travelling to Europe in February or March can actually be a great experience.

The South of Europe is never cold and frosty, and different destinations in Southern Spain, France, Italy, Sicily or Cyprus are great places to spend a long, yet affordable vacation.

Spain

Spain is a country that can easily be visited all year long. Located one hour away from Madrid, Toledo is considered to be the spiritual capital of Spain. It was formerly inhabited by Jews, Romans and Muslims. The city is even compared to an open air museum, and this happens because of all the interesting historical sites that can be found there: medieval buildings, churches, mosques and synagogues.

The largest Roman city in Spain is placed at Merida, a modern settlement where tourists come to marvel at the constructions that were built by the former Roman architects. The amphitheater is stunningly well preserved, and the same thing goes for the houses, which have been raised in the second century A.D.

Numerous famous Spanish museums can be visited during winter as well; this means that you will not have to wait for hours in line, as it happens during the summer season. Madrid, Catalonia and Valencia have several worldwide known museums, so make sure to check them out if you decide to visit Spain.

Estonia

Talinn in Estonia boasts with a great medieval town that can be visited during the winter season as well. The old town represents a great tourist attraction, as every street has several charming legends and historical events. Estonia will also charm you with its specific cuisine, and it is a well known fact that many tourists come to this Northern European country just to taste the food that is cooked there.

Numerous restaurants include medieval recipes in their menus, and it will be a great experience to taste some of the dishes that people loved to eat several centuries ago. The products created by Kalev, a famous chocolate maker, can be found in many of the Estonian shops. You should not leave the country until you have tasted, at least once, the famous Classic Estonian marzipan.

Talinn also offers people the experience of stepping back in time, when people lived a much different life in comparison with our modern lives. The Estonian Open Air Museum will open the gate of time for you so that you can explore the houses, the farms and all the other ancient Estonian traditions.

Greece

Greece is another country where the weather is pleasant even during winter, letting you enjoy long walks or various trips to different regions of the country. As an example, the Acropolis, a well known landmark of ancient Greece, can be admired in Athens.

Then there is the Parthenon and all the other old buildings or ruins, which are a real proof of the peak of the old Western Civilization. The Minoans represent the first civilization that expanded around 1500 B.C. and many traces of them and their constructions can be seen in Greece, in Knossos. In fact, the massive palace complex in Knossos should be the first stop on your winter holiday itinerary, if possible.

Greece also offers its tourists the pleasure of spending their vacation on one of its numerous islands, even during February or March. As an example, Mykonos, the island known as the St. Tropez of the Aegean Sea, will be a nice stop if you are looking for beautiful sandy beaches and fishing ports.
